At the Master's Table

Daily Devotional: Boldness With God?

Paul encourages us to come boldly to the throne of grace. Through his writing, we discover a wonderful attribute of the believer.
Hebrews 4:16

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

Paul exhorts us to have confidence in our salvation and our High Priest. He argues that we must strive towards the rest of God, laboring in this life so we may attain the rest Jesus promised us (v. 11). He reminds us that Christ has been tempted in all ways in which we can be tempted and on this basis we can come boldly to the throne of grace to find help in our temptations.

Do you realize that you can be bold with God? The Lord has made us certain promises, and therefore we have the right to ask God to fulfill them. The example Paul provides is that since God has promised us rest if we hold to the faith in this life, then we can boldly ask for His help in enduring with faith. That is, we can confidently ask God to strengthen our faith so that we can overcome a trial because we know God desires us to overcome the trial and is capable of giving us the encouragement we need to be victorious.

God is to be revered. We are to be humble, ever thankful that He has chosen to elate us who are unworthy to a high stature. Nonetheless, we are elated to a high stature; we are considered equal to His Son. This is extraordinary. A prince does not have to have special permission to speak to the king; the king is his father and will therefore gladly hear his son at any time for any reason. So, too, will God hear us who have been adopted as His sons and daughters at any time for any reason. We have the promise that God loves us and wishes us to return to be with Him in glory forever. Therefore, we can blatantly ask for wisdom, strength, and anything else that will help us accomplish His will.

I have confidence that God is able to fulfill His promises. When I ask God to remake me in the likeness of His Son, I do not have to beg or plead or doubt if He will do this because God has promised to “give good things to them that ask him” (Mt. 7:11). I have the boldness to say that God is my defender because He has promised to protect His children. I can ask God to forgive me of any sin I have committed, knowing that He will forgive me if I am truly repentant. Boldness with God is knowing that God will hear and affirm your prayer because He has already promised to answer that particular prayer and therefore asking expecting to see your request performed.
