At the Master's Table

Daily Devotional: Dead to Sin

In Romans, Paul teaches the mystery of becoming dead to sin and gaining life in Christ. What does this mean?
Romans 6:1-23

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.”

When Christ came into your life, everything that you were passed away in death. You became a new creature. All the things that used to bring you joy suddenly took on a new perspective. God put the Holy Spirit inside of you, and as a consequence you began to notice and understand things you had never seen before. This is the new life Christ brings to all who believe on Him as their Savior.

You only have new life once you die. Death has no more power over the believer because the believer has already died and been resurrected in the spirit by Jesus Christ. The former self has passed away, and a new creature of a combined being of man and the in-dwelling Holy Spirit is born.

At the moment of conversion, the person changes. God works in a believer to change his motives, goals, and desires one by one. God reveals the error of the person he had been and encourages the person he could become. Suddenly dead to sin, the believer for the first time in his life has the ability to choose righteousness! He can still choose to sin, but for the first time he does not have to choose sin!

  • Reflection: Do you have the freedom to choose righteousness, or are you still slave to sin? Leave a comment below to share how God has liberated you from sin.
