Jeremiah 23:33-40
“And the burden of the Lord shall ye mention no more; for every man’s word shall be his burden.”
God warns that if we replace His words with our own words, then He will forsake us. How easy is it to judge the Word of God, to say, “I think this verse really means such and such,” without consulting the Holy Spirit! How easy it is to apply our own opinions to Scripture instead of allowing Scripture to form our opinions!
Even if we listen diligently to the Scriptures on Sunday, do we obey them throughout the week? Do we not often apply our own understanding towards the decisions we make? Lord help us all. We ignore the most perfect, divine words spoken by the wisest King and replace them with what we think. How foolish are we! Do I really think that I possess more wisdom than God? Do I really think that my way is better than His? We must be so careful in life that we surrender to God and “lean not to our own understanding.” We must be so careful to let the Holy Spirit inform us of what to do instead of filtering His words through our opinions and desires. We must be careful to not replace God’s words with our own thoughts.
