At the Master's Table

Daily Devotional: The Lord of Hosts

The psalmist tells us that even "though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea," we shall not fear. This confidence in God can be yours, too.

Psalm 46:1-11

“The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”

Though the ground is giving away beneath him, the Christian has no reason to fear. The world can literally be ending, and the Christian can have perfect peace. Why? Because God is his refuge.

If you have truly committed your life to Christ, then you have nothing to fear. If you are walking with Him, serving Him, and obeying His commands, then God promises to fight on your behalf. Even though you may not be physically delivered, you will be spiritually delivered.

God fought for Israel at the Red Sea. God freed Peter from prison the night of his execution. Yet God did not deliver Stephen from being stoned.

While God has all power and authority, He does not always deliver His people from physical harm. Yet He always delivers them from spiritual harm. If we are close to God, then death, hell, and the grave have no hold over us. Like a mighty captain, our Savior has defeated those enemies for us.

God is the Lord of Hosts. He is the mightiest warrior in existence. All the armies of heaven are at His command. With a single word, He can send legions of angels to defeat our foes, be they physical or spiritual. Satan cannot stand against Christ’s power. In the end, Jesus will stand victorious over sin, death, and Satan. Such is why, even if the world is ending around the Christian, he can have perfect peace that God will deliver him.
