Daily Devotional: Thou Art Fair

Christ wants to view us as His fair love, but are we honoring and appreciating His pure love?
Song of Solomon 4:1

“Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair”

How vast is God’s love for us! Scripture compares Christ’s affection for His church as the love a husband has for His bride. The Song of Solomon vividly portrays the depths of His passion for the church. What a comfort to know that Christ is madly in love with His people!
Nonetheless, I must immediately consider myself. Feeling His devotion brings me to question my love for Him. Do I display the same dedication and selflessness that He demonstrates towards me? Do I give my life as He gave His?

We must remember our first love and not be drawn away by a desire for another lover or a life of freedom and independence. Christ has everything we need in life, so why yearn to be anywhere other than by His side?

We are foolish to allow our minds and hearts to wander away from Christ’s rich love. Yet we do it all the time! Be extremely attentive to your thoughts, speech, and choices. Notice and eliminate any aspect that demonstrates unfaithfulness to Christ. Do not wrong Him by neglecting or even becoming unappreciative of His love. Worse, do not ignore Him when He finds something that displeases Him.

Consider this simple story. A husband sees that his wife wearing a dress that has a stain in the back. He tries to warn his wife not to wear it that evening, but, because she cannot find the spot, she dismisses his warning and wears the dress anyway.

How does the husband feel? His wife failed to believe him, failed to trust him.

When eating dinner, one of her friends notices the stain and politely informs her. How embarrassed and ashamed does she feel?

While in this life, no one may ever notice our stains, but Jesus sees them. He warns us and does what He can to show us our error. Therefore, let us be obedient, faithful spouses and believe what He says. Then, we will not be ashamed when He reaches His hand to us in tenderness, proclaiming, “Thou are fair!”
